Kerr Street and Fox Street Intersection
The completion of traffic signal installation at the Kerr Street/Bangalow Road intersection will be followed shortly by traffic signal installation at the Kerr Street/Fox Street intersection. This lengthy project is scheduled to recommence on 7 September 2009.
This construction is being undertaken by Council working as a contractor for Mirvac. Mirvac has a requirement to install these signalised intersections as part of the Ballina Central shopping centre development.
A diagram is attached showing the extent of work and duration of proposed works. There is a significant amount of highway road widening to be undertaken on the approaches to the intersection. These are described as stages 7A, 7B & 7C and 7D and will be undertaken during 2009 and be completed before Christmas 2009. During this time there will be only minor road closures, being Russell Street for stage 7A and Princess Avenue for stage 7B.
Following the Christmas holiday period, and commencing at the end of January 2010, the Kerr Street/Fox Street intersection will be rebuilt with the roundabout being removed. It is only during this period that Fox Street will be closed at the highway, being on the east side during stage 7E and on the west side during stage 7F, with ’Giveway’ signs controlling the traffic entering the open section of Fox Street. Local motorists are asked to use other roads to access Ballina Central business districts and surrounds as an alternate route during this time.
The planning for this project has been undertaken to minimise disturbance on the commercial shopping centres operating adjacent to the highway. Major road closures (Fox Street) will only occur during February and March.
