Youth Council

What is the Youth Council?

The Ballina Shire Youth Council comprises a group of young people aged 12-24 years and provides them with the opportunity to express their views and advise Council on youth-related issues and a range of other matters relating to Council’s functions and activities.

What does the Youth Council do?

The Youth Council assists in identifying the major issues/ needs of young people in the Ballina Local Government Area (LGA) and to make suggestions to Council ( where appropriate) to respond to these issues.

The Youth Council also assists in the organisation of youth-related events, for example the annual Youth Week promotions.

The elected Council and its staff are available to assist the Youth Council members in gaining an improved understanding of the role and structure of Local Government.

How will this be done?

  • By providing an opportunity for young people to raise and respond to issues from a youth perspective.
  • To provide a linkage between young people and Council.
  • To provide specific recommendations to Ballina Shire Council for consideration about a range of matters.
  • Inform and educate the wider Ballina Shire community about youth issues.
  • Assist in the coordination of the annual Youth Week events.

Membership of the Youth Council is open to young people, aged between 12 and 24 years who live in the Ballina LGA.
