2018/2019 Beach Open Season

Beach Safety - increased patrols at our beaches

Going to the beach is a popular pastime for all ages, visitors and locals alike. Council has been monitoring the popularity of our beaches to improve the safety of beach goers. This swimming season there will be an extra lifeguard at Sharpes Beach who will also provide roving patrols at Flat Rock.

Volunteer lifesavers + professional lifeguards

Surf lifesavers are trained volunteers who patrol our beaches on weekends and public holidays during the warmer months. In Ballina Shire volunteer lifesavers are members of the Ballina Lighthouse and Lismore Surf Lifesaving Club or the Lennox Head Alstonville Surf Lifesaving Club. In comparison professional lifeguards are employed by the NSW Australia Lifeguard Service and provide safety services to Ballina Shire Council during the week.

New tower

A new observation tower has been erected at Sharpes Beach. The tower will provide shelter and improved vision for the lifeguards that patrol Sharpes Beach

The creation of the tower will improve the ability for lifeguards to monitor and manage the safety of all beach users at this popular location. Funding of the tower is thanks to almost $40,000 from the NSW Department of Primary Industries through the Observation Towers Funding Program, with Ballina Shire Council also contributing $40,000 to the project.

Become a nipper

Surf lifesavers don’t just patrol the beach, your local surf club plays a much bigger role in the local community.
Looking to joining Surf Life Saving in NSW? There is a role for everyone at your local surf club – whether you like competing, patrolling, education and of course becoming a Nipper.
