Tamar Street Bus Interchange Upgrade

proposed worksite for upgrade to Tamar Street Bus Interchange

Council has secured $1.3 million in funding from the Australian Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure fund to upgrade the Tamar Street Bus Interchange in Ballina’s CBD.

As part of the upgrade, the aging bus shelter will be demolished to make way for a new and more efficient structure. The new design aims to improve traffic flow within the interchange as well as increase passenger comfort and accessibility.

The project will include:

  • Two bays for buses to pick up and drop off passengers with improved bus entry into the interchange
  • Separate taxi zone
  • Improved stormwater drainage
  • Widened walkways for pedestrian safety and accessibility.

During construction, a temporary bus and taxi zone will be located nearby in Tamar Street at the front of 76 Tamar Street (Barker Ryan Stewart).

The entry to the Wigmore Arcade and carpark will remain open throughout the project, however due to the construction zone, there will be a temporary reduction in available parking spaces within the carpark area.

Additional temporary car parks are located at 71 Tamar Street. Enter off Tamar Street opposite the bus stop.

Works were due to start in March but have been delayed. It is hoped that works can begin in mid-2024. Council will publish further information on our website and provide notification to businesses and residents when a new commencement date has been set.
