Volunteer Programs

If you are interested in joining one of Ballina Shire Council's volunteering programs, please contact the program officers below:

Ballina Byron Gateway Airport Ambassadors

The Volunteer Airport Ambassadors are located at the Visitor Services Desk in the arrivals lounge of the Ballina Byron Gateway Airport. Volunteers meet and greet visitor arrivals at the airport and inspire and motivate them to see and do more in the region. Ambassadors require a strong commitment to customer service and a willingness to enhance their local knowledge to assist them in their role.  If you enjoy meeting and talking to people, have sound local knowledge of the Ballina Shire and the Northern Rivers region and have good interpersonal skills, we encourage you to contact the Ballina Visitor Information Centre. Volunteers are rostered on a weekly basis with each shift being approximately two hours in duration.

Landcare and Coastcare

Landcare and Coastcare volunteer groups in Ballina Shire provide an important part of protecting, conserving and restoring the shires biodiversity through bush regeneration, weed control and plantings. This involves closely working within many of the shire's endangered ecological vegetation communities and around many threatened plant species on coastal and hinterland bushland public reserves. The volunteers' labour contribution for this program amounts to $250,000 towards the various project areas that are under restoration. This significant volunteer contribution assists Council manage the high conservation value bushland reserves and adds to additional grant funding opportunities.

Broadband for Seniors Tutoring

The Broadband for Seniors program is currently held twice each week at the Kentwell Community Centre in Ballina. It offers free internet access and computer training for seniors by volunteer tutors. Volunteer tutors are crucial to the success of Broadband for Seniors. At a kiosk, volunteer tutors provide face-to-face training in computers and the internet to senior Australians. Volunteering can be personally fulfilling, all that is needed is your computer and internet skills, your time and a willingness to help others. Sessions are generally one-on-one and go for one hour. Tutors normally volunteer for 3 hours, once a week, however we can be flexible to suit the availability of tutors.

NRCG volunteers are integral in promoting Gallery programming and are responsible for monitoring and keeping artwork safe while the Gallery is open.  Gallery volunteers may also assist with the physical installation of exhibitions and/or special events. This may include packaging of artworks that have been sold during an exhibition, assisting the installation team during bump-in and/or bump-out of exhibitions or providing a meet and greet role at launch events. Volunteers are to be available at least one shift per fortnight however a weekly shift is preferred.
