Property Numbering

Your property address

Who allocates road and street numbers?

Your local Council does. This can be a complicated process and many things need to be taken into consideration, so please do not allocate your own number.

How and when are urban addresses determined?

Street names and street numbering are allocated when land is subdivided. If you live in an urban area and are unsure of your address, please contact Council.

How and when are rural addresses determined?

Rural address numbers are allocated in a logical sequence based on the distance from the datum point (start of the road) to the property driveway. For example, a property numbered 620 means it is 6.2km from the datum point.

What happens when you are on a corner, front more than one road or have more than one dwelling?

An alternate address may be available.  Please contact council for further information.

What to use as your mailing address?

Your allocated address, in most cases, will be your mailing address. For example:

Resident name J.A & B.C Bloggs
Property or business name (if applicable)

"Wanderway"

Property Number Road Name

1234 Alphabet Road

Locality State Postcode

DOWNTOWN NSW 2488

However, you may use a private box or bag at your local post office or collect your mail c/- Post Office. Check with Australia Post for further information. Change your mailing address.

How to display your property number?

The illustration below shows examples of how numbers can be displayed at a property entrance for quick and easy identification.

Do existing addresses ever change?

Changes to address allocations are generally avoided unless it is confusing for emergency services.

Why are correctly allocated addresses important?

Consistent, correctly allocated addressing ensures that the public, emergency services and other agencies have access to accurate and reliable address information.

Council allocates addresses as per the NSW Address policy and guidelines - Geographical Names Board of NSW which outlines the NSW Geographical Names Board and NSW Roads Act addressing requirements.
