Alstonville Cultural Centre Upgrade

  • Project typeCommunity Facility Upgrade
  • Project value$18.2 million
Mock up design of proposed new Alstonville Cutlural Centre

The Alstonville Cultural Centre, has been a vital facility for sport, recreation, and library services since its construction in the early 1980s. However, the Centre has not undergone any major renovations or modernisation – until now.

In 2021, Ballina Shire Council endorsed a concept design to refurbish the Centre, including a new two-storey library annex, informed by community feedback. The development application was approved in 2023 and Council is now focusing on the tender process for construction. Council will update the community once a construction start date is confirmed.

The redevelopment will transform the Alstonville Cultural Centre into an accessible, modern, and fully compliant facility, meeting the needs of the growing Alstonville and Wollongbar communities.

What’s included in the refurbishment?

  • Two-storey library annex with lift access
  • Upgraded, accessible amenities
  • Expanded sports hall court to comply with modern run-off standards
  • New roof sheeting and a solar PV system to reduce energy costs
  • New office, reception, and kitchenette
  • New entrance foyer and servery
  • Off-street access for better community connectivity

What can I expect during construction?

During construction, residents can expect a staged program of works beginning in May 2026. Initial activities will include establishing the site office and amenities, followed by demolition of the existing library in June. Excavation works are scheduled from August, with construction of the new centre to commence in September. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2027.

During this time, there may be some impacts such as noise, increased activity and changes to access, with the construction schedule subject to weather conditions. Council will provide regular updates throughout the project, and residents can also visit the website to stay informed on progress.

Will I be able to access the library?

There will be a temporary library service at Wollongbar Community Hall during the project. A smaller, curated collection will be available, along with access to the full collection via reservations and ongoing digital services, including ebooks and audiobooks. Why do we need a new library in Alstonville?
