The Ballina Bridges Duplication project will deliver an extra bridge on each road between Ballina and the M1 motorway. The project will enhance road safety, ease congestion, improve travel times and ensure more reliable access for residents during floods and other natural disasters. These vital corridors play a critical role in connecting communities and providing safe passage during emergencies. More bridges and wider roads will deliver safer, more reliable access for residents every day – and critically during emergencies.
To ensure the safety of roadwork crews and road users, changed traffic arrangements will be in place during construction, including:
Late 2027
The Ballina Bridges project is estimated to cost $85 million. This includes costs related to planning, design, public service utility relocations, and construction.
The Ballina Bridges Duplication project is jointly funded by Ballina Shire Council and a $48 million grant from the Australian Government’s Emergency Response Fund, administered by the NSW Reconstruction Authority under the Northern Rivers Recovery and Resilience Program. This major infrastructure investment will make a real difference to the safety and confidence of our community.
Currently 26,000 use the network daily, and this is expected to increase to 29,000 vehicles within 10 years.
It is estimated that 500 jobs will be created over the lifecycle of the Ballina Bridges Duplication project.

Construction (2026/2027)
Both Canal Bridge and Fishery Creek Bridges will remain open during construction.
